Survival Essentials – Shelter, Water, Fire, Food, Tools, Tracking, Hunting and Mindset: 2 Day Intensive: What is essential to life? What knowledge and tools are best to carry when you venture alone into the wilderness? In this course you will hone your skills of self-reliance and feel more comfortable wandering into any environment, with everything organized in your pack, or nothing but the clothes on your back.
Day 1: “The mind can be our greatest enemy or our greatest ally” TB Jr. We begin with the Survival and Tracking mindset! We cover shelter, water, and fire; making an exhaustive list of essential tools, and experimenting with modern and ancient ways of providing our most basic needs. We learn to move safely across the landscape and locate a good shelter spot, ideally near a source of potable water. We then dig a coyote well, and later learn to utilize a metal cutting edge, or broken rock, to carve a bow drill friction fire kit. Each participant will hand craft their own take home fire kit to practice with after the intensive is over.
Day 2: Food! Our second day is an introduction to wild edible and medicinal plants, tracking, hunting and trapping. Water purification and primitive cooking methods will also be shared. We will cover scouting, stalking and wild game acquisition (large and small prey), practice throwing stick, and make a primitive deadfall or snare trap to catch our dinner.
Reclaim your body from the effects of a modern lifestyle! Moving as an animal creates incredible changes in our human physiology. A combination of natural and Ninjutsu based movement work to unite the synergistic muscle groups of your body to the Earth, and your surroundings. These exercises develop proximal stability and distal mobility, proprioception, muscular endurance, strength and flexibility. The goal is to move with joy, control and ease, allowing for fluid transitions from low to high levels, explosive power, a soft, quiet and supple grace, and to roll or fall without injury.
Practice the essential language of the drum, and experience the incredible phenomenon of call and response, polyrhythmic group play. As one village ensemble, we’ll create traditional polyrhythmic hand drumming, song, and melodic patterns inspired by the w. African djembe orchestra. Exercises in listening, group orchestration, and improvisation techniques will be shared by all. BYO Drum if you have one
